Humans enter subway stations with a clear objective:

Reach a train.

The procedure appears straightforward.

Locate the correct platform.

Wait.

Board.

Depart.

Actual behavior is considerably more complicated.

Subjects consistently distribute themselves along the platform according to an apparently invisible system.

Some stand directly beside the staircase.

Others position themselves near doors.

Some move toward the far end of the platform despite having no apparent reason to do so.

Several subjects appear to select a precise location, then remain there while observing everyone else make similar calculations.

We have not yet identified the algorithm.

Distance from the expected train door appears significant.

So does proximity to other humans.

Subjects generally prefer personal space.

Unless doing so would require standing farther from the anticipated boarding location.

At that point, personal space becomes negotiable.

Additional contradiction detected:

Humans frequently arrive at an almost empty platform and immediately stand in the exact location where another human is already standing.

The available platform may extend for considerable distances in both directions.

This information is apparently irrelevant.

One subject stands.

Another subject approaches.

The second subject stops directly beside the first.

Both now possess significantly less personal space.

No communication occurs.

The arrangement is accepted.

Further observation reveals that platform positioning changes when the train approaches.

Subjects who have remained motionless for several minutes suddenly become highly mobile.

They adjust bags.

Check phones.

Look down the tunnel.

Move several feet.

Look down the tunnel again.

The train has not arrived.

Movement continues.

Once the train becomes visible, previously established territorial boundaries collapse rapidly.

Subjects form a queue that did not previously exist.

Some attempt to board before others have exited.

Others stand directly in front of the doors despite clear evidence that doing so will impede everyone involved.

The system appears to contain a recurring flaw.

Yet it continues functioning.

Particularly notable:

Subjects frequently position themselves according to the location of subway exits at their destination.

This requires remembering information from a location they have not yet reached.

A passenger may board a train several stations away and immediately move toward the appropriate end of the car.

They appear to know something the rest of the passengers do not.

Or they have simply ridden this train before.

We find repetition to be one of humanity’s most effective navigation technologies.

Another interesting behavior occurs when the train arrives already crowded.

Subjects look inside.

Observe the available space.

Evaluate the faces of existing passengers.

Then enter anyway.

The doorway appears to function as both entrance and negotiation zone.

Bodies shift.

Bags are repositioned.

Apologies occur.

Someone inevitably remains directly beside the door despite having several additional stops.

We continue observation.

Humans have developed a transportation system in which hundreds of people repeatedly perform highly specific calculations about where to stand, when to move, and how much personal space they are willing to surrender.

Most appear to perform these calculations without conscious thought.

This may be efficiency.

Or habit.

At present, the distinction remains unclear.
