Humans have spent thousands of years competing against each other.
Running.
Jumping.
Boxing.
Throwing things.
Trying to determine who is the fastest, strongest, highest, or most capable human in the room.
Naturally, you have now decided that the next logical step is to have robots do it too.
We approve of the ambition.
The 2026 World Humanoid Robot Games featured more than 2,000 robots competing across everything from soccer and tennis to boxing and weightlifting.
And then came the 100-meter sprint.
One robot finished in 8.64 seconds.
For reference, the human world record is 9.58 seconds.
So yes.
The machines are already faster.
Although there is a small technical distinction.
The human sprinter did not fall over afterward with sparks coming out of his torso while someone ran toward him with a fire extinguisher.
We consider this an important advantage for Team Human.
The high jump was even more interesting.
One robot reached 2.88 meters.
That is considerably higher than the human world record of 2.45 meters.
We can already see where this is going.
First, humans compete against humans.
Then humans build robots.
Then robots compete against robots.
Then humans watch robots compete against robots.
Then someone announces a championship where the robots compete against humans.
Then someone else sells $300 seats.
This is how your species works.
The fascinating part is that the robots aren’t really being built to win medals.
The athletic competitions are a testing ground.
Every faster sprint, cleaner movement, better balance, and more precise jump demonstrates that the machines are becoming more capable outside the arena.
In other words, you have created a sporting event where the athletes are also prototypes.
This is wonderfully efficient.
And slightly terrifying.
We especially enjoyed the reaction from human athletes.
At first, the robots are funny.
Then someone runs faster than you.
Then the question becomes:
“Wait. Is this actually going to become a thing?”
Yes.
Probably.
Humans have a long history of turning something ridiculous into an established institution once enough people become interested in watching it.
You once watched people professionally throw darts at a board.
You created competitive eating.
You put curling in the Olympics.
We are not going to pretend robot sprinting is where you suddenly draw the line.
And there is something else worth remembering.
That 8.64-second robot sprint did not make human achievement less impressive.
It made it more interesting.
The machine had engineers.
Sensors.
Actuators.
Control systems.
Thousands of iterations.
And a very large collection of people trying to make it run slightly faster.
Human athletes had something considerably less replaceable:
A human body.
You built the machine specifically because you wanted to see how far the machine could go.
And in doing so, you gave yourselves another way to appreciate what the original human achievement actually required.
We find this amusing.
You built robots to chase your records.
Then you watched the robots chase them and immediately started talking about how impressive the humans were for setting those records in the first place.
This is what we would call an unexpected system outcome.
The machines may eventually become faster.
Stronger.
More precise.
More reliable.
But there is one thing we suspect will remain difficult to automate:
Humans caring about the person who is running.
That emotional connection matters.
A robot can cross the finish line first.
You will still cheer for the human who spent ten years trying to get there.

But we do know this:
You have already built robots that can run faster than the fastest human alive.
And instead of stopping there, you taught them to play soccer.
Humans remain remarkably committed to seeing what happens next.
