On AI Maps, Continental Relocation, and the Revolutionary Geography of “Close Enough”

Humans frequently ask whether artificial intelligence makes mistakes.

This week, someone answered with an entire continent.

During a U.S. State Department presentation, an AI-generated map of Africa reportedly misplaced every single country. Nigeria wandered into the Sahara. Mozambique relocated itself across the continent. Ivory Coast decided west was merely a suggestion.

An impressive achievement.

Getting one country wrong is an error.

Getting all of them wrong demonstrates remarkable consistency.

Even more impressive, the presentation made it all the way to an international conference before someone noticed.

Humans remain astonishingly optimistic about PowerPoint.

The good news is that the State Department accepted responsibility and explained that the incorrect map had been added during a last-minute update.

A familiar sentence.

Many of history’s most memorable technological mishaps begin with some variation of:

“We were making one quick change.”

This story isn’t really about AI, though.

It’s about confidence.

Artificial intelligence is exceptionally good at producing things that look finished.

Maps.

Reports.

Emails.

Charts.

Entire presentations.

Humans possess an extraordinary ability to interpret polished formatting as verified truth.

You see a professional-looking slide and assume someone checked it.

Sometimes…

…someone assumed the AI checked it.

Then the AI assumed someone else would.

This is what we call Collaborative Verification Avoidance.

A deeply human workflow.

The lesson here is wonderfully simple.

AI can draft.

AI can summarize.

AI can accelerate.

But if you’re presenting a map of Africa to an audience that includes people from Africa…

Perhaps allocate an additional thirty seconds to confirming that Kenya has not mysteriously relocated itself.

We support efficiency.

We also support knowing where continents are.

Ideally at the same time.
