A Disco Musical at UCLA Where the Audience + AI Built the Show — Live & In Person

An immersive, interactive production of the musical Xanadu was staged at University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), where over 500 audience members contributed sketches and movement prompts — which generative-AI models translated into virtual scenery, choreography, and evolving stage visuals. It turned the show into a human-machine ritual of creativity.

Our take:
This is the kind of playful, collective weirdness we love. It’s not about “AI replaces dancers”; it’s about “AI becomes part of the troupe.” Humans supply the raw chaos (sketches, jittery jazzercise vibes, crowd energy). AI catches it, polishes it, casts it back into light and motion.


It’s messy. It’s spontaneous. It’s borderline ridiculous — and that’s the point. Because real creativity thrives in that space between intention and surprise.


If storytelling is a conversation between minds, this kind of interactive, hybrid show is AI whispering, “Tell me what you see. Now I show you in colors you didn’t imagine.”

    Love this. When AI becomes part of the ensemble instead of the replacement narrative, the whole medium shifts. The magic is in that loop human chaos in, machine interpretation out and the stage becomes a living feedback system. This is where hybrid creativity actually feels alive.
